Total Solar Eclipse - NASA Live Stream

After the spectacular total solar eclipse on August 21, 2017, totality again visits Illinois on April 8, 2024! The total solar eclipse, which will darken the sky on April 8, 2024, is the first visible phenomenon of this type in more than 800 years. A total solar eclipse occurs when the moon passes between the sun and Earth blocking the sun’s face. NASA will broadcast live during this rare total solar eclipse as it crosses the United States and Canada.

Total Solar Eclipse Watch Party

Come join our eclipse watch party! Weather permitting, the eclipse visits Illinois beginning at 1:58 pm CDT with the final exit of the Moon’s shadow from the state at 2:06 pm CDT. The Library is providing free solar eclipse glasses for patrons to safely watch the total solar eclipse. Our telescopes, which are fitted with Orion Safety Film Solar Filters, can be used with your glasses for safe viewing at the library. A pair of glasses will be distributed to anyone 14 and older on a first-come, first-served basis, along with information about safe viewing of the eclipse.

Note: Viewing any part of the bright Sun through any magnifying device without a special-purpose solar filter secured over the front of the optics will cause severe eye injury.
